"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to take in higher esteem those who think alike than those who act differently." In a world of so many conformists we need at least a couple who "take the road less traveled by." Many public schools are beginning to use uniforms. They believe that they promote academic performance. Edison township plans to enforce a mandatory uniform policy in their public schools. While there may have some positive effects, the negative outweigh them. The policy would infringe on the rights given to us in the Constitution. It would cause students to rebel in better places. The uniforms would cost much more money.
A uniform policy would infringe on the rights given to us buy the first amendment of the Constitution. This amendment states clearly that everybody has the freedom of the expression. This includes students. Schools are already breaching our freedom of speech. Any more than that just shown that the membors of the school bourd do not care about a document created specifically for our country that took many years to write. Some people might say that people don't express themselves through their clothes, but their words, their spirit, their personality. Students do not know how to show everybody who they are without their clothes. They embed themselves through their clothes. The Constitution is the most important document in American history. No one should try to violate that.
If students cannot control their clothes, they will want to take control of the larger issues. Children, like all of us, just want control of their own lives. They can't control much, but they can control their clothes. Taking this away would cause an extreme, negative reaction. Without clothes to take control of they would take control of more important things, such as homework. Some people may argue that students would not actually do this. That they care too much about their grades. The truth is kids know that the teachers and principals would not enjoy a good percentage receiving Fs. Clothes are a miniscule item compared to homework.
It would cost a great deal more for parents to buy the uniforms than regular clothes. Instead of buying seven to ten outfits, they would have to by 13 to 14. Uniforms would also be much more expensive than everyday clothes. They would also have to pay more money for water and detergent considering they only have three or four outfits during the week. Those on the side of the uniform policy might say that it costs less because they only have to buy three or four outfits. This is wrong because do kids really want to go home and wear their uniform. They're not going to want to wear it on the weekends either. This might cause families to go into poverty.
Uniforms have some beneficial qualities, but the negative tip the scale. A uniform policy would infringe on the rights given to us buy the first amendment of the Constitution. If students cannot control their clothes, they might take control of a bigget issues. It would cost a great deal more for parents to buy the uniforms than regular clothes. A uniform policy would cause an uproar among sudents, parents, and the founding fathers.
